Disney Announces Live-Action Moiana Movie Starring Dwayne “The Rock” Johnson

That’s what Disney and the well-known Dwayne Johnson announced A new live-action Moana film is in development.

Dwayne Johnson unveiled the project during Disney’s annual shareholder meeting, held this week. Not much has been revealed about the new film, but Johnson said Moana, Grandma Tala, Te Fiti, Heihei and, of course, Maui will be starring. The actor who gave his voice to Maui in the animated film Moana, will bring the character to life in the live-action version.

In the announcement video, Johnson again credited the inspiration for Maui to his grandfather, former WWE star Peter Maivia.

This story is my cultureis a symbol of the grace and warrior strength of our people,” Johnson said in a press release. “I carry with pride this culture on my skin and soul and this unique opportunity to reunite with Maui, inspired by the spirit of my late grandfather, Supreme Chief Peter Maivia, It’s something that cuts me very deeply“.

The film is being produced by Johnson, Dany Garcia, Hiram Garcia and Beau Flynn. Auli’i Cravalho, who provided the voice of Moana in the original 2016 film, will serve as executive producer. It is not yet known who will direct the film.

Moana is the story of a young woman chosen by the ocean itself to receive a mystical relic from the goddess Te Fiti. Along the way, Moana meets the exiled demigod Maui, who guides her in her quest.

The live-action version of Moana follows suit Disney’s growing list of live-action remakeswhich includes “Beauty and the Beast”, “Aladdin”, “Mulan”, “The Lion King” and “The Little Mermaid”.
